Why the program start
As the world’s ninth longest river, Lantsang-Mekong River is the most
important river in Asia, originating from China’s Yushu, running through
China, Myanmar,Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and finally into
the South China Ssea. In the past few years, much attention has been
attached to the protection, governance and development of this
sub-region, and to the economic cooperation and cultural exchange among
the six countries.
Amidst the trend of globalization, it is top on the agenda for institutions of higher education to engage students in global and regional public affairs and cultivate their awareness and capability of global governance. The Lantsang-Mekong International Summer Camp for College Students has been held in Yushu, Qinghai Province, China, in July, 2015, which attracted over 70 officials, scholars and students. The program was so successful that laid good foundations for the following youth innovation competition.
Experiences were gathered after the summer camp to develop it into a brand in the long run and with higher standards. The opening ceremony and the international seminar of YICMG were held in Nanning, Guangxi Province in January, 2016. During the conference, a programme framework, a Management Committee, an International Expert Committee and a mentor group were set up through full discussion. And the competition theme for 2016 was issued.
It is envisioned that this competition would provide a platform for the students from the six countries, focusing on the sub-regional and local public issues and carrying out co-curricular learning, such as field survey and social practice. Students are encouraged to, through teamwork, work out suggestions and solutions, which will get improvement through this international competition and might be practiced in the real world.
The competition is also designed to call on the institutions and academies in all the six countries to support their students’ out-of-class research, innovation and entrepreneurship, and to provide a network for cultural exchange, transnational cooperation and new modes for sub-regional governance.
Besides, this international competition is engaged in raising funds from the six countries for the sub-regional governance, youth innovation and entrepreneurship, which will promote international cooperation and youth growth.
